The British Working Mum

Back to School

After six weeks of summer fun with the kiddies we are now back into routine, school runs and sensible bedtimes. We enjoyed lots of sunny days on the beach, our annual trip to beautiful Cornwall surfing the amazing Porthtowan waves and a few lovely lazy days spent at home on our Devon farm. We are never short of choice for great days out here in the South West, the little ones are always kept occupied and we enjoy country life to the full. I hope you all had a great summer.

So what’s new?

In the lead up to this year’s Autumn Fair I created two new characters along with new products to add to our ever-growing collection. I wanted to expand our range of mugs and add to our luxury notebook sets. Very soon I will be introducing Stella The Sloth and Taj The Toucan as our new stars this season.

Trends suggest that the sloth is the new unicorn! I have to admit I don’t think sloths are the most attractive animals; but now seeing Stella in all her glory on our products, she really does fit in perfectly!

Taj the toucan is a handsome, striking bird who I instantly fell in love with. Taking inspiration from an amazing interior designer, Sophie Robinson, and her wonderful use of colour, I chose a splash of blue and a hint of lime to complement Taj and his vibrant personality.

Also, our fun flamingos, Flossy and Amber, have had a mini-makeover. A few small tweaks have been made to tie all of our brolly collection together.

I am always working hard to develop my range of designs and products, I love using colour to show off the characters at their best.

All the fun of the fair

The Emily Smith stand at the Autumn Fair

We really enjoyed this year’s Autumn Fair. Meeting retailers, designers and fellow traders is always such a pleasure and networking after hours with a glass or two of wine was a cracking end to another successful event.

We have made many new friends and built fantastic working relationships, it really is great to share ideas and receive so much lovely feedback on our brand.

Thank you so much to everyone involved.

Who would’ve thought!

Recently I was shortlisted for the South West Entrepreneur Awards for the creative industries.

I entered on a whim, it was very much an “I might as well” scenario. Little old Emily, with a rather common surname, has a story too! I was absolutely over the moon when I received the news. This recognition is really heart-warming and has given me a big confidence boost. I cannot wait to attend the awards ceremony next month.

And finally…

Here at Emily Smith Designs, my aim is to bring high quality British products to market and I am always keen to connect with new British manufacturers, so if you happen to be one of them, please get in touch.
