Retail Rants: Speaking to the Invisible People


If you’re wondering, like we were not that long ago, how to sell wholesale to retailers then it’s not exactly an easy process! Firstly, it’s pretty time-consuming. Everything starts with the initial market research, checking that your products fit the retailer and imagining them on their site or in their store. This takes forever (ok we might be exaggerating a bit here, but it does take a while) and sadly, it could all be for nothing!

Next comes the task of sussing out who to contact – don’t be fooled into thinking this is easy because let me tell you: retailers aren’t always that helpful with handing out their contact information. But all of this (hopefully) leads to a polite response from a friendly employee, right? Someone really interested in your products and eager to help you? Yeaaah, not quite…


Nothing can be worse than logging onto your emails early in the morning, only to be greeted with the dreaded auto-response. We’ve been there before! What gets us is the fact that there’s just no personality – are we even speaking to a human?! “Thank you for your email. We receive a lot of enquiries and will endeavour to get back to you as soon as possible”. Signed, the Invisible People. And just like that, you’re smack bang at the bottom of the pile.

The generic emails are just as bad. Even though they’re sent by a real person (yes, a real person!) this time, you just know the same one has been sent to all the other hopeful business owners out there. Of course, these retailers are the goal for many people like us, so obviously they’re going to get a LOT of emails day-in, day-out. But that doesn’t make it any less frustrating!


We’ve often thought that if we could just get our foot in the door – you know, meet one of these buyers face-to-face – we’d be able to show them our products and convince them that they’re worth selling. But that just hasn’t been an option yet. We’re pretty ambitious (and resilient!) though, so we try not to let the Invisible People get us down. If anything, it makes us more determined to succeed! There is no one way how to sell wholesale to retailers, so although it sometimes feels like a setback getting automated emails and generic replies, we’re not going to let it stop us. We’re working our way up the retail ladder and we’ll build our empire with or without the Invisible People’s help!
